Making the Most of Every Moment

Making a positive difference to how spaces are used is one of the driving forces here at bwd.  We also like to share our knowledge and expertise around.  Bev, our Creative Director, regularly lectures at UCLan (University of Central Lancashire) and we often take on student placements.  Helping graduates is not the only thing we enjoy doing.  We have recently been helping the lovely people at Derian House Children’s Hospice, in Chorley, to refresh their reception area as well as their Parent Lounge.   As a Derian House supporter we have been undertaking a voluntary project for them and we’ve loved doing it.

“Situated in the heart of Lancashire, Derian House is renowned throughout the region as being at the forefront of children’s palliative and respite care.  Families who have a child with a life shortening condition can choose from a range of care and support services to meet their individual needs which include; short planned breaks in Derian House, Hospice at Home, Sibling support group, end of life care and support at home, or in Derian House, and Bereavement support after the death of child.”

The staff at Derian, as well as parents play a crucial role in caring for the kids (and young adults) at Derian so when we started looking at the two spaces we turned to them for the briefing input.

We are a long way down the design process and most of the ‘bought in’ items like new furniture and lighting are now installed.  We have learnt a lot on this interior design project.  For example, we were really excited to develop a carpet featuring a pencil design.  We based our idea on a rug the staff liked from our initial ideas boards.

The initial designs for the parents lounge

The carpet design, which we developed with Milliken Carpets (thanks Sajay, you have been very patient) was designed to be fun, inspiring and colourful for the children. Sadly, after presenting samples of the actual carpet tiles, the staff felt the carpet texture was a little too ‘rough’ for the kids to roll around on, so we are now investigating other softer options.  It just goes to show how dialog with the ‘end user’ and also creating samples (where feasible) of the ‘actual’ products is always worth it, even if it means we have to go ‘back to the drawing board’.

Talking about the drawing board, we at bwd still do sketching to communicate our ideas.  This loose drawing, by Bev, was sketched in the client meeting to show ideas for the window blinds.  We are now looking for fun and quirky cord pulls; spiders or similar to add a fun detail to the blind.  Anyone have anything like this, please let us know?

Clients compliment us on our sketches as it’s a great way to quickly communicate our design thoughts.

It has been a pleasure to put aside some of our time for this most worthwhile project. Seeing first hand all the hard work and commitment that goes into running such a superb charity has been a big inspiration. Please show your support for Derian House and help in any way you can. Volunteer your time/expertise or donate to this great charity. Use the section below to explore ways of helping. We look forward to your comments.

bwd at the shardAfter a most exciting trip to London our Managing Director, Beverley Wood, returned with lots of photos we just had to show you.

Below are six photos taken at the Institute of Making – a multidisciplinary research club for those interested in the made world. Read last week’s blog Living in a material world for more information.

Aero Gel at the Institute

Bev saw Aero Gel on show at the Institute and was so taken aback by how it looked like smoke she snapped this photo. See last week’s post for more information on this material

Insperation at the Institute

An excellent place to inspire interior designers, architects and creative types.

Bev also came across this glass balustrade with fabric inside. Also seen at the Innovation Centre in Saint Gobain – Another favourite bwd inspiration location

After seeing the Institute of Making on TV only a few weeks ago it was a pleasure to be able to get close to the interesting and innovative materials within. We would like to thank Zoe Laughlin for showing Bev around and would recommend this excellent institute of anyone interested in innovation and design.

From material innovation to building innovation a visit to London would not be complete without a visit to The Shard. Bev was astounded by this building and the views from the top. Another destination for any designers visiting London.

Here at bwd, we are definitely material babes. In fact our Creative Director, Beverley Wood, is going to the Institute of Making in London today. With over 1500 materials in their library she can’t wait to see what’s being showcased.

“The Institute of Making is a multidisciplinary research club for those interested in the made world: from makers of molecules to makers of buildings, synthetic skin to spacecraft, soup to diamonds and socks to cities”   www.instituteofmaking.org.uk

We are keen users of traditional materials however, we believe our clients benefit from the fact that we are continually exploring ways to use new technologies. Watching the recent coverage of the Institute of Making on BBC’s The One Show, we started to think about ways to use more revolutionary materials in our design schemes.

Here are three super-materials that we think could revolutionise the design world:

1. Nanocellulose Algae – a sustainable product of biofuels, is used in computer components, in armour for soldiers and in flexible smartphone screens and many other applications. This substance could be one of the most environmentally friendly compounds. This stuff is amazing, just take a look at this article on The Huffington Post UK

2. Aerogel (Solid Smoke) – a substance light, super-strong and able to absorb 900 times its own weight. Aerogel is being tipped as a new potential heat-insulation material as well as something useful in the clean-up of oil spills.  Just think how useful it is for architects for developing sustainable housing

3. Garphene – tipped as the next major material revolution it conducts electricity better than anything else, is 300 times stronger than steel and only one atom thick….wow!

What would you use these materials for? Have we got you thinking? Lots more information to follow when Bev returns from London.

The British summer would not be complete without a good ice-cream. They bring back memories of being with the family and make any visit an event.

Now its time to let you into a bwd secret. We are currently working on a project for a private client in Cumbria designing their new ice-cream parlour.

Shhhh... don’t tell anyone. This project is currently under development

Between you and me…

We cannot tell you how much fun this project is! There are so many cool products, pieces of furniture and designs that we have been able to draw upon; we find ourselves spoilt for choice.

Check out these amazing ice-cream lights that the client loved. How do you like your ice-cream? Maybe you like the traditional scoop (regular round bulb) or maybe you like soft serve ice-cream (energy saver bulb).

Pop-Up Progress in Manchester Arndale

You might remember our post last year, around the May Bank Holiday, when we told you about our designs for Manchester Arndale for their ‘Inside Live’ event. We created the set design for the fashion showcase, as well as some fabulous beauty workstations which the likes of Body Shop loved..

Well we were so pleased to see our set design being used again, including our beauty workstations, at Manchester Arndale FlashMob Fashion event which took place last weekend.

“The latest hair and new spring make-up ranges will also be available to view and try out at in the ‘pop-up salon’ in Halle Square with staff on hand to offer styling tips and mini-makeovers.” Read more…

The FlashMob-style fashion event featured two of our ‘goalpost’ graphic units as well as the beauty stations, as pictured being used by Lush, the high street’s handmade cosmetics company.

The fantastic photographs, taken by Jason Lock Photography, really show off our designs and demonstrate how flexible and re-useable our units are.  We believe it pays to think a design brief through and to work out the details. Aside from creating a branded set design, we have developed units which:

- Attract attention, but do not affect footfall and travel through the busy areas of the shopping center.

- Store away easily, in smaller sections, but can be rebuilt quickly.

- Use magnetic graphics which means the images can be changed to suit various events.

- Offer complimentary mobile beauty stations which are stylish and practical.

We are so proud to see our designs still in use and look forward to seeing them in many more events this year.

Did you see or visit the FlashMob Fashion event? If so, did you use our pop-up set? We’d love to hear your thoughts or see your pics.

Blackpool Tower’s New Look

What’s red, green, blue, yellow and purple? Why it’s the iconic tower just down the coast from us in Blackpool and this is no joke.

Last week saw one of the North West’s most known landmarks turn purple. A fitting tribute for a landmark in a town famed for light displays and the cause this purple light show represented – a day supporting epilepsy awareness.

Since February 2013 the tower has been fitted with LED lights in replacement of its old, less efficient pygmy bulbs. This £250,000 project has not only brought brighter lights to the tower but also a vast array of new options when it comes to light design for the now modern display.

This sort of lighting technology has been available for some time but only seems to be coming into Vogue most recently. This comes as no surprise as these systems can be programmed to display thousands of colours and animations. With this in mind just think how this could be combined with traditional and modern architecture.
LED Light Design
Well-designed lighting can change the look of a building immediately working both subtly on a winter’s day and assertively at night. It is a human trait to assign personalities to buildings and structures. Lighting can modify the image of a building without the actual structure changing.

In a modern world paced by change and development is this what we crave? Building that also subtly change and develop on a monthly basis? Here at bwd we like it! Being big fans of the town just down the coast, Blackpool has a special place in our hearts and it’s great to see the Tower receive the attention it deserves.

What would you give Blackpool Tower’s new lights out of 10?

Project Paperclip

Tags

Hello bwdAn office object that is so simple and functional we have all used them at some point. A thin piece of wire commonly comprising of three half spherical 180 degree bends that simply and easily slide onto paper to clasp pages together.

The humble paper clip brings two cornerstones of our design philosophy together. Form and function. Simple and elegant their malleable yet sturdy form lends itself well to reuse or reshaping. They perform their function with such success they do not divert any attention away from the documents they hold together.

However, we personally believe there is room to improve the traditional form of paperclips. We believe they can and should be personalised. Over the past weeks we have been developing our own paperclip using our logo which is also a paradigm.

On our journey to design and develop the perfect bwd paperclip we came across the following which can be purchased online. We found a whole host of animal paperclips – perfect for adding a bit of fun to the office. Or how about the number clips that add extra organisation to the well-established function of paperclips?

For us, our best result from our clients is their happiness with what we have created for them, so we love that there are other companies out there that share this with us!

Fab - Smile

Fab is Everyday Design

Fab is a website providing creatively designed websites and apps as well as selling creatively designed products, but Fab differs to other stores because, in their own words, they “set out to delight you, inspire you, make you laugh, and give you something to look forward to” every day.

Fab provide a huge range of pieces, but here are just 5 that we love:

Range of Bird lighting by Gwendolyn & Guillane Kerschbaumer

Range of Bird lighting by Gwendolyn & Guillane Kerschbaumer

We love the subtlety of these lamp’s design. They’d be appropriate for a variety of spaces, domestic or commercial, particularly in child-oriented areas.

bed by Innocent Beds

The dark shades and design of the bed are very masculine, but the softer curves and practicality bring it back with a feminine touch. We envision this piece of furniture in a luxury hotel suite.

glassware and mugs by FIFTYEIGHT PRODUCTS

We cant get enough of these expressive, colourful pieces of crockery. We want them in our homes, and even just to leave around the office to cheer us up on a rainy day! Reminiscent of the crockery in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, we can only hope the jug will burst into song.

storage bench and ottoman by La Nomade du Design

These contemporary benches are also weatherproof, so can be used outdoors or indoors, and the sleek design means an endless list of appropriate uses, domestic and commercial.

piggy banks by Areaware

The product description for these piggy banks is enough to make us favour the art inspired project – “Bank in the Form of a Pig is part of the Reality series designed by Harry Allen for Areaware. Allen’s work emphasizes the inherent beauty of things. This bank is produced by casting polyester resins in a silicone mold from a real pig who lost his life (from natural causes). The result is a highly detailed, realistic sculpture who sure likes the taste of your bread.”

Illuminating Ideas from S&O

As a design company, we understand how difficult it can be to remain creative and different from the rest. Inspiration and influence can come from the most surprising of places, but with constant mainstream communication from social and fashion trends, advertising, and the media, designers can often end up following each other down the same paths.

Product designer Hisakazu Shimizu and design director Eizo Okada established their Japan-based industrial design company, S&O Design, in July 2012, coming together with heavy-weight experience and a fantastic thought concept Continuous Design.

S&O Design – Ice Cream Spoon by Hisakazu Shimizu, created in 1998 and still selling today

S&O Design explain their concept as a mission of industrial design.

“Within this rapidly changing society, companies draw customers through the appeal of their products, and it is increasingly difficult to continually raise that value. Today’s products must also exhibit a stronger sense of originality than those before them, as well as a flexibility to continue evolving.”

It is a great concept that we love. Click here to continue reading.

The design duo have many different projects and products that they work on, and we look forward to seeing more of their creative interpretations as they evolve more as a company.
